A tree changes the scale of a garden. It gives the eye somewhere to rest, wildlife somewhere to land and the house a softer relationship with the sky.
The right tree is not necessarily the biggest tree. We look for a species and a position that can mature without fighting the building, the neighbours or the light-loving plants below.
Trees are slow design. They make the garden feel more complete every year, which is why choosing well at the start matters more than chasing instant impact.
Even a small multi-stem tree can create a room: a canopy overhead, a place to sit underneath and a changing pattern of light on the ground.
